Catarine spoke in her sweet, soft, calm voice . . . making Kayden feel even worse. “It is really not as bad as you are letting on, Kayden.”

It had only been two days since the Prince had taken her out to the gardens and she was already so bored, she was ready to scream.

“OK, I tell you what. You sit here for ten days and then tell me it isn't so bad.”

Catarine laughed then — probably at Kayden's expression. She'd tried to smile as she made her suggestion, but it probably came out more as a grimace.

“You know what, you're right. It's terrible. I don't know what I was thinking.” Catarine put a finger to her cheek and looked off into the distance before adding, somewhat theatrically . . .

“Beautiful room, all my meals delivered, an entire troupe of people tripping over themselves to take care of my every need, a wonderful friend who brings me books, who sits and talks to me — or rather, who listens to me complain.”

She raised an eyebrow meaningfully before going on. “Personal visits — daily, mind you, from the Prince.” She shook her head. By then, it was all Kayden could do not to laugh.

“I see what you mean. It must be terrible for you. I don't know how you're enduring under the strain.”

She laughed and then giggled, before adding in a loud whisper, “Quick, I'll make a commotion to distract the maids. You make a break for the doors.” At that, Kayden did laugh.

She did not want to admit it . . . she really didn't want to, but she knew her friend was right.

She really had nothing to complain about.

Catarine and the Prince took turns keeping her company and Catarine was at least the easier of the two because she chattered about everything that was going on in the rest of the palace.

“Ooh, did I tell you . . .” and Kayden half tuned Catarine out then, knowing the important part of what she was talking about was long over.

At first, she had only talked about things like the weather and things in some of the digests she brought in for Kayden to read when no one was there to entertain her.

After several hours of it, Kayden had stopped her new friend.

“Catarine, please stop all the small talk. Tell me about something real, something going on outside these doors . . . please?”

Catarine, of course, had hedged . . . at first, anyway. Then after Kayden had practically begged, she finally gave in and started talking about the latest drama in the “Princess Search” — as Kayden had dubbed it weeks ago.

Apparently, the Prince had sent home two more girls, which had them down to eighteen now. Of course, Kayden no longer considered herself a candidate because she was stuck in this bed, but she still had hopes for Catarine.

She had decided weeks ago, if something crazy was to happen and she should be told to call off her mission, she would want Catarine to win.
